I just wanted to show you the cover that was designed for the third book in the series, It's Not About Her. I think it's cute. Thank you Pamela Morrisson for your creativity. The model for the third book is a friend of mine who used to live in my town. She's married to a youth pastor and has the cutest boys in the world (next to mine, of course.)

Anyway, these are the final covers. I like them because they are uniform in design. Do you like the new look for the series? The third model's skin tone is not as pale now. Pamela Morrisson, the same talented lady that designed my Tombstone bookmarks, made these for Sword of the Spirit (my publisher.)

Note: There were some inaccuracies noted, so please read this first.

I never wrote a book titled "Reflections" as stated at the end of the article. That was written by another Michelle Sutton in 1996, not me. I hadn't started writing until 2003. Also the St. Michael's church mentioned was in Flint, MI, not Syracuse. Also, there is no State University of Northwest New York. It's simply State University of NY. The conference where I met Francine Rivers was in 2004, not 2005. I only have three publishers, not over half a dozen. Last, I've authored over a dozen novels, but currently seven are published, not over a dozen. The rest of my books are releasing over the next two to three years and they are all contracted. Now that we've cleared up the boo boos, here is the article. The columnist is a good writer (and a retired pastor) so it's entertaining to read. It's funny how so many times interviews are littered with small mistakes, but I didn't want people who live in Syracuse, for example, to say, "What? There is no St. Michael's in Syracuse!" I know there isn't, hence the clarification. Anyhoo... enjoy!

Last weekend I was in Phoenix, Arizona for a writer's meeting and I detoured to meet a "fan" and autograph a few books. Here is a picture of me with Candice. She's 19 and a freshman in college, which is the perfect age for my series so I was thrilled that she'd read my book several times. She's nice and very pretty, isn't she? I love meeting people in person who have enjoyed the books I've written. The first question I always get, though, is "when's the next book coming out?" To which I answer, "September." So if you enjoyed It's Not About Me, be sure to keep an eye out for It's Not About Him coming this fall.

Last update from the mission field in Kenya.

Hey all! Bwana Asafiwe!

We are finished with our Mission Assignment at Neema Children's Home and are now back in Nairobi. Katie is resting right now, but she and the baby are doing very well. I'm starting to think that being around all of the kids playing football (soccer) has inspired our child...the baby has been kicking often and hard.

We are back with our team now and the staff surprised us with a belated 4th of July lunch today (I have never been so excited to see a hamburger in my life!) Even though the Kenyan food has all been very good, we found out just how much we missed American food.

The next few weeks are supposed to be very busy as we zip around Nairobi doing different projects (the first of which will take us back into the Mathare Valley Slums) as well as learning about Hinduism and Islam in Kenya. It was very hard to say "Kwa Herini" (goodbye) to the children yesterday...we had really become a part of the Neema family...but we are glad to be on the next leg of our journey.

Please pray for God to give us strength and energy to push us through the last few weeks here. Though the three of us are still very healthy, we have not really had a day off since we got here and it has been taking its toll on us. We are very physically, emotionally, and spiritually tired.

Lastly, as we prepare to head back to America in the next few weeks, the issue of finances pops its head back up. After returning to the US, we will still have $2900 of our total left to pay for this trip. (Intervarsity has covered that amount for us until we return). While some have suggested that we hold the new baby hostage here in Africa until the funds show up, we know that isn't necessary. Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated. So many of you have already donated toward this cause and we pray that God bless you all for your support.

There are a few addresses in our list that have typos in them, and because of time constraints combined with slow internet service we aren't able to correct them all. (We also pay for usage by the minute). Please continue to forward this message to anyone who might have been missed because of this error.

Another update from "Annie" and "Tony" from Africa!

Here is an update from Devan and Katie, my wonderful cover models.

Habari? (That is Swahili for "how are you?")
Katie and I are excited to be sitting here together in a cyber cafe in Ngong (nnn-gahng) to write you today. We are finally able to tell you all what we will be doing here in Kenya. Our group of 25 people will be splitting up tomorrow morning and we will be spread out all across the country in groups of two (the extra person is staff).

Katie and I are really looking forward to spending the next three weeks living at Neema Children's Home in North Kinangop. There we will spend time teaching classes in the school, spending time playing with the children and teaching them about the Bible. We'll be living with the school's founder Mama Catherine who we will meet later this afternoon. We are told that the biggest part of our assignment will be spending time with her, helping her in any way that we are able.

Now that everyone knows where we are going we've begun trading clothes and other helpful items as much as possible. The area we are going to be in is very cold and we have been bartering with other people trading shorts and t-shirts for sweatshirts and pants. It's been fun.

We've been healthy so far, and the baby has been kicking stronger than ever. Up to now we haven't had to take a bucket bath...we'll mark that down as a blessing.

Since our last email we have been through so much it is difficult to put into words everything we've encountered in so few words. We've been going through a lot of cultural training and are attempting to put together a few phrases in Swahili. Friday night we went to a local Medical school and attended a Christian college group meeting. They broke up the, as they called it, "Dudes and Chicks" into separate groups and had a question and answer forum on how to be yourself and find the right person for you. We had a blast and thought it was cool how relationship questions and issues transcend continents and cultures. It was also great to see how people our age interact in Kenya.
Sunday was our first experience in a Kenyan church. The church we attended was also a children's home. It was really incredible to worship with 145 children around. As soon as we arrived they grabbed our hands and led us all over showing us their home, the farm, the goats and laughing as we tried to say what they were in Swahili.

We would like to say thank you to everyone's prayer and support on this journey. Please pray that we are open to the lessons God is teaching us and that we can compassionately serve at Neema (which means "Grace"). We hope all is well with all of you and will continue to pray for you. We may not email again for a few weeks, so please don't be concerned if you don't hear back from us.

Also, some of the emails in our list were incorrect and didn't make it where they were supposed to. If you could please forward this to anyone who might not have received it that would be appreciated.

For starters, they (Devan and Katie) are in Africa on a missions trip! Yeah, these young adults are really serving God this summer. Here is what they have to say about their experience in Nairobi, Kenya so far (below)...

Hello everyone! This is Devan writing on behalf of both of us from a cyber cafe (pronounced kayf) in Nairobi. We were split up into a few different groups today and dropped off in the middle of the city on a scavenger hunt. I don't have much time to go into detail on anything because i have just half an hour to do this and most of that has been eaten up already by the slow internet.

First of all, I would just like to report that both of us and the baby are doing well. It has been difficult for the two of us to adjust to the relational dynamic of the people here in Kenya. At times it feels like we only really see each other just before we climb under our mosquito nets to go to bed.

We have really enjoyed the food, especially the chai and the chipate (i have no idea how to spell that. chipate is kind of like a panfried tortilla). It does feel like all we do is eat because between meals we have a break for chai and snacks like fruit (bananas, mangoes, pineapple) and biscuits or muffins.

Yesterday was a physically, emotionally and spiritually draining day. We spent several hours walking through the Mathare Valley Slums. I do not know how I was able to walk through that place without tears rolling down my cheeks. We had heard about what it was like there, but to truly see it for ourselves was overwhelming. The dirt paths we walked down were nearly paved in garbage and filth and we had to carefully choose our steps to avoid stepping the the streams of sewage running down the center. At times, we had no choice but to walk right through it. The thing that most upset me was watching the children walk barefoot in it as if it made no difference. As we walked across a rickety metal bridge over a river flowing in sewage (the banks made up of garbage heaps) I looked down and saw a boy that was about four years old. He had tied rags together and looped it to the bottom of the bridge to create a swing over the trash. That image will never leave me.

The people there were so incredibly beautiful, especially the children. Despite the horrendous living conditions there was an air of joy amongst the residents as we passed by their metal shacks. Everyone would stop and stare and laugh as the wazungu (swahilli for white people...often shouted as we pass) attempted to greet them in their native tongue. One woman reached out and rubbed my arm just to see if my skin felt like hers. The children would run after us excitedly waving and chanting "Howayou! Howayou!"

Unfortunately, I am out of time and must leave. I hate to leave at this point in the story but I hope we will have another opportunity to write again soon. The beauty of the slums is that there is hope for these people. That hope is us. No people should live like that. We can make a difference.

I must go, but we will continue to pray for all of you. We love you all dearly.

My book It's Not About Me will be releasing soon (Sept 2008) so I'd like to introduce the minor characters in book 1 that become the main characters in book 2. Meet my fictional characters, Susie and Jeff. Susie looks happy in the top picture because she is happy, and thus the happy shot goes on the back of the book. The second picture of her with Jeff is more in tune with the story theme. Susie is confused and a bit sad. Jeff is in love and wants her so badly, but she doesn't know what to do. So what do you think??? Remember, It's Not About Him. :)

Forrest was born in Torrejon, Spain on the military base. He speaks a good bit of Spanish (in fact spoke more Spanish than English until he was almost three) and loves the performance lifestyle. Let's get to know him a little better. Then, make sure you go see the Virginia City Players perform this summer at the Opera House in Virginia City, MT.

Angie: Where are you from and if you are willing, please share your age education level, college?

Forrest: I'm from Missoula, MT. I'm a 23 year old, college senior in Music and Acting.

Angie: What are the productions you are the most proud to have been involved with? Why?

Forrest: Urinetown at the University of MT, and Anything Goes at the Bigfork Summer Playhouse

Angie: Such awesome theater at both those locals! Virginia City is a living ghost town of 135 people. Just driving through, you wouldn't notice all the amazing hidden wonders. So, what's it like living in a ghost town? Also share the Best thing/Worst thing.

Forrest: It's pretty much like any other small town except there’s more fun history stories. Best: great people. Worst: No cell service. Haha.

Angie: He says that about the cell service because Forrest has to drive outside of town to get reception and call home:-) Have you ever done Summerstock like this before? Where? How did you audition?

Forrest: Yes, I worked at the Bigfork Summer Playhouse. The producers came to a show I was in after they were referred to me by a professor. Then I was offered a job.

Angie: What do you want to accomplish in your acting/singing/dancing career?

Forrest: What every young musical theater person dreams of: to make it on Broadway. Of course I would love to play a super/action hero in the movies, too.

Angie: Obviously you have a creative side. What other things about you are creative? (Hobbies, other talents not showcased here, abilities you'd like to develop.)

Forrest: I write, draw, sing jazz, and also enjoy directing, although I don’t have much experience there. I also like to build worlds for stories and role playing games.

Angie: Are you a reader? If so, what genre and favorite books?

Forrest: Yes, I read a ton. I mostly read fantasy and sci-fi novels, but I enjoy a wide variety of books.

Angie: If you could tell a director in an audition why you are unique and why they should hire you, what would it be?

Forrest: I always take a note, and will bring a hundred different ideas about a character to the table for you to say no to until we find the ones you like.

(Aside: A "note" means director's notes or verbal observations that the director wants changed about the actor's performance or participation in the troupe. When an actor is given a note, he has been given direction by the director. If the actor can assimilate that observation into his performance and accept it with professionalism, then he is deemed to take notes well. We could liken it to constructive criticism or praise from our boss, editor, or other authority.)

Angie: What one thing do people tell you over and over again about yourself?

Forrest: I have a great voice.

Angie: Ahem, he does:-D He used to walk through the hallways at school singing between classes. That's the one thing teachers said they would most miss after he graduated high school.

So Forrest, what's the funniest thing that has happened to you in Virginia City or with the Virginia City Players?

Forrest: I got a speeding ticket one minute outside the town on my way home. Haha.

Angie: If you live in the actor's row (cabins by the pond), what does the stage coach driver say each time he toodles by with tourists?

Forrest: …and this part of town used to be known as Chinatown…

Angie: Where is your favorite spot in Virginia City and why?

Forrest: The stage, obviously! That’s where I do what I love.

Angie: Is there some time or place in your past that pointed you in the
direction of acting?

Forrest: I acted a little in high school but college is where I got hooked. I was in my first semester of college taking acting for non-majors and I had a great prof. Mike Verdon really opened my eyes to the world of acting.

Angie: Where do you see yourself in 5, 10, 20 years?

Forrest: New York City, making boatloads of cash, and achieving all of my dreams!

Angie: How did you get involved in the Virginia City Players?

Forrest: I had the Producer, Stacey Gordon, as a director in Opera theater at the U. Later I auditioned for several theater companies, got called back to about half and got the job with the ‘Players’.

Angie: Are you willing to share your deepest fear and greatest joy?

Forrest: My deepest fear is a failure in my integrity, and my greatest joy comes from knowing that, even when I fail, I am still loved and accepted by my savior, my family, and my girlfriend, Tristan.

Angie: What's a normal day like for a VCP actor? How does it change through the summer once rehearsals slow down?

Forrest: For the first six weeks we frantically learn new plays, and write vaudeville olios from 9 am to 9 pm. After that most of us get day jobs to bring in a little extra cash.

Angie: Are you homesick? If so, how do you handle it?

Forrest: Yes, I try to keep in touch all the time, and go home every week. It does get expensive, though.

So there you have it! An interview with the man who posed as Dan on the book cover for It's Not About Me. He so busy I had to borrow and interview done by my friend Angie, but I got one!

Katie was born in Longview, Washington, and raised in a small town in Montana called Roundup. She was named after her Grandma, who is also the person that she got her red hair from. For fun she liked to eat good food, read a good book and go for drives. The funnest thing that she did was anything with her husband, which usually involved food of some kind.

As far as work goes, Katie is a barista, which means that she makes coffee. She feels like she works at a coffee shop with the best coffee in town because it has a small town coffee shop feel to it. That's why she likes working there so much. It reminds her of how she grew up. It is also a part of her ministry. She knows about 60% of the customers by name, and has had some great conversations with a lot of them.

Right now she and her husband are in the middle of trying to find out what the Lord has in store for them. They have started a Bible study on Sundays called Coffee T.A.L.C. (Taking A Look at Christ). It's a place where they encourage non-Christians to come and ask the tough questions. They refuse to settle for pat Christian answers to their questions. They stay in the gospels and let the conversations take off from where the Word points them. Along with that ministry, they run some Friday college nights with music and good conversation.

She doesn't believe she has any weird or amazing talents. Her husband tells her that she has the ability to make people feel comfortable enough in a matter of minutes to tell her their life story. So you could say that's a talent...to make people open up and think about their life and the Lord.

A funny moment she had was at age 12. For a Christmas play she sang a song about Martha Stewart being her hero while wearing a sweater with a picture of a huge Christmas tree and real bells.

When she was 6 she went to Disneyland for her Aunt's Birthday. They had donuts in the motel room in the morning. She decided to try the strawberry filling out of one of the donuts. There was no one in the room, except that video camera recording her.

On an ending note, it took her the first nineteen years of her life to figure out that Jesus was real, and that He really will take you as you are. She turned her life over to Christ one word and one minute at a time over the course of three years.

It started with her own curiosity and then slowly Christ changed the way she felt about being a typical teenager or college student of the world. He changed her. She never asked to be changed. That was six years ago and now she can say that for the last three years she has been striving to follow scripture by first loving the Lord with all of her heart, mind, and strength. In these past three years there has not been a day of regret over doing that with her life.

Spotlight on Devan, posing as Tony Lane.

Welcome to my spotlight on Devan, who posed as bad boy Tony Lane. He is pictured below with his real-life wife Katie, who posed as Annie Meyers.

Devan works as the sales rep for the family HVAC business, Design Air, Inc. and Mighty Ducts. They specialize in residential heating and air conditioning systems with our main focus on improving energy efficiency and indoor air quality.

Devan and Katie were married in December 2007. They are planning to head to Kenya this summer to spend two months participating in Intervarsity's Global Project mission. Devan and Katie are currently fund raising for that trip.

Devan and Katie are also starting to plan out a ministry program together. In the past they have run a few events out of the Bear's Brew. Because it is so close to UM's campus it draws a lot of the college crowd. Many people request to play music there, so they do their best to utilize on Friday nights. They generally have been able to keep the Brew (as they call it) open late on Friday nights to give people an alternative option to partying. With all the events and requirements for college students it's amazing to see how many people welcome the opportunity to just hang out and do nothing. Throw in some free food and some live acoustic guitar and people will come running!

They are planning to start up "Coffee Talk", which is a completely informal and generally unstructured bible study. It's more of a bible discussion. They begin with just a general question and try to let conversation flow as freely as God inspires it to. Attendance ranges any week from 2-20 people. Katie and Devan also each participate in weekly bible studies separately and are planning to start one together. A staff member from the Navigators has recently been encouraging them to pursue funding through their Navfusion program. At this time everything they do as ministry is an out-of-pocket expense.

More fun facts about Devan...

In high school, Devan tackled a guy off the top of a bridge into the Blackfoot River thirty feet below. He was wearing a ladybug costume made for a little kid. It's on film somewhere...just don't know where that footage ended up.

Devan has a very minor role in a movie that is being released in March (last he heard). The movie is called "A Plumm Summer" and is based on a true story. It stars Henry Winkler ("The Fonz"), Billy Baldwin and Lisa Guerrero. Jeff Daniels is supposed to be narrating it as well. Devan never auditioned for it. When he was cast, he didn't even know it was being filmed.

I thought you would enjoy getting to know them. That post will come at a later time, once I get the content I need to post. For now I will tell you that I think it was a God thing that these three young people who happen to be the exact same ages of my characters were introduced to me.

My dear friend Angie Breidenbach (who I roomed with at last year's ACFW conference and met via her hiring me to build her website) has three talented children. Katie, the girl on my cover who is posing as Annie, just married Devan, Angie's son. He is the guy in the leather coat on my cover who is posing as Tony. Angie's son Forrest, who is in the background, is modeling as Dan, the older brother in my story.

These are all wonderful young people who did a great job. This is a picture of what my final cover is going to look like. The cover editor is still tweaking some of the hues in photoshop, but this is the way the cover will look style-wise. I hope you like the format. Even if you don't, I'm sure you will love the story. :)
